NAZARETH MS TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM RELEASE DAY - 10TH ANNIVERSARY

About 115  eighth graders from Nazareth Middle School, under the direction of science teacher Tim Cunningham, released 45 brook trout fingerlings, that they had raised from eggs provided by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, into the Bushkill Creek at Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center. This was the tenth year that Nazareth MS has participated in the program in partnership with our chapter. Our chapter provided a "cold water" conservation talk, a fly tying demo and had the students casting fly rods. Brian Wagner, using his fingers and arm to represent the Bushkill Creek watershed explained how Trout Unlimited protects, reconnects, restores and sustains our local waterways. It was good to have some of our "regular" volunteers back in the saddle. Jere Haas with over 60 years of fly tying experience demonstrated a few patterns that have been catching trout forever and helping with the casting were Nick Weston, Don Germanton and Karl Loser. Other activities included a study on non-native invasive species, geocaching, macro-invertebrate identification and measuring flow rate. We would like to thank the DCNR educators, the Nazareth MS staff and the students for making this a fun and educational day. We would also like to thank the school for providing lunch, having grilled about 200 hotdogs and providing chips and water. A good time was had by all!
